Kitty Disastrous

# VIDEO GAME

Rocket 5 Studios set out to create an action/adventure game that defies genre conventions—blending platforming, puzzle-solving, and vehicle chases into a heartfelt story about a destructive cat rescuing her ferret friend. Drawing on our AAA experience and indie sensibilities, we built Kitty Disastrous from the ground up as a premium, pay-once experience that puts player satisfaction and creative storytelling at the center of everything.

The Challenge

The platformer and adventure game markets are crowded with titles that lean heavily in one direction: either punishing difficulty and combat-focused gameplay, or slow-paced puzzle-solving with dense dialogue trees. We wanted to find the sweet spot—a game accessible enough for casual sessions but deep enough to reward invested players, with a unique identity that would stand out in digital storefronts.

We also needed to build for scale. Our target was simultaneous release across PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PS Vita, requiring a flexible architecture that could adapt to each platform's requirements without compromising the core experience.

The Solution

We developed a state machine-driven control system supporting 13+ movement states—from ground traversal and ledge mechanics to vehicle sequences and cinematic interactions. The signature "Umbrella Gondola" mechanic lets Kitty traverse power lines between rooftops, creating verticality and exploration opportunities unique to a cat protagonist.

The puzzle design emphasizes interconnected solutions: sabotaging a bicycle triggers a chain of events leading to a bakery break-in; combining inventory items like string and magnets creates tools for later challenges. Over 25 puzzles in Episode 1 reward observation and creative thinking without punishing failure.

For the narrative, we leaned into environmental storytelling. Kitty can "read" the humans around her, sensing their desires and potential connections. Her destructive solutions to rescue Ferris inadvertently bring people together—the cop crashing through the bakery window meets the baker; the lonely pet store clerk finds love at the farmer's market.

Outcome

Kitty Disastrous delivers a polished, character-driven experience across a multi-act structure featuring vehicle chase sequences, QTE encounters, and a cast of memorable characters. The Unity-based architecture supports our wide-release strategy with object pooling for performance, a checkpoint system for accessibility, and localization support for international markets.

The game embodies our studio philosophy: make the game we want to play, respect our audience with a premium model, and prove that indie studios can deliver AAA-quality experiences with heart.
