"what's wrong with the app store" is that the iStore (and Android) app categories are ridiculously broad. "lifestyle"...what does that even mean to someone who isn't a marketing droid?

this might be overkill: http://www.techrepublic.com/software

but, for instance, the standard freedesktop.org application categories list used by most Linux distros and repositories, is both concise and granular, and could be adjusted to mobile apps easily.

http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/apa.html

the most annoying thing (to me, since i'm not an iPhone user) is that Google, although Android is actually a Linux distro at base, have religiously copied down each and every Apple store application category into their own marketplace (mistake #1):

https://market.android.com

except they've *reduced* the number of game categories (mistake #2). that's just a bad idea on nearly every front i can think of.

Apple's new Macintosh Application Webstore uses the exact same list, with the minimal addition of Software Development (with no subcategories) and Video (ditto). imagine trying to find a particular class of system software out of the 120,849,000 hugely diverse applications that would be listed under "Utilities"!
